One of things I managed to accomplish before flying home from Berlin was to give Jurek Becker a formal invitation to spend much of the spring 1978 semester in Oberlin, as Max Kade German Writer-in-Residence. Becker had moved to West Berlin in December 1977, so he did not need to get a special visa from the GDR authorities.
